Have you ever wondered why two people can view the very same experience and draw completely different conclusions about what transpired? Or why you have the reoccurring emotions and thoughts you experience? How about your challenges, addictions, gifts and passions? Where does all this stuff come from anyway?
Now the answer is simple but it’s also complex. In this article, I’ll give you the simple version. It all comes down to one word, karma (action). Interested in the complex version, with a lot of nuts and bolts? Read Lights, Camera, Action (Extended Cut).
Essentially, past action from this lifetime and previous ones, is stored within the subconscious and condition your experience. To use the metaphor of a movie projector, you are the light that shines though the projector. The film/movie, is that portion of your karmic savings account selected by the creator to feature in this life time, so that the dharmic field as a whole remains balanced. Finally, the holographic images that appear on the screen of life, are simply the light, you, shining through the filter of you past actions.
So what truth can be gained from this knowledge? First, you are totally responsible for your life, including your sensations, emotions and thoughts. If you feel any blame for anyone or anything, you are simply delaying your personal evolution.
Second, we can also affect future karma by the attitude we have towards action and choices we make, now and going forward. This is the essence of karma yoga. In other words, we have the power to make our lives meaningful, peaceful and enjoyable.
Third, you as the light, are never negatively impacted by the experiences you have. To return back to the movie analogy, I’d like to ask you a question. Do the images on the screen ever impact the light of the projector? That would be a big no and this is super good news.
Vedanta, the ancient science of consciousness, teaches us that lasting happiness results from knowing who we are. We suffer when we identity with the body, mind, sense complex, because it is inherently limited. The body is like a car that can run only so many miles, that has limited features with pluses and minuses. However you, as the light of consciousness, are always whole, complete and good.
Call it awakening, enlightenment, freedom,… what ever you like. The key that unlocks the door to a meaningful and good life, is moving your identification from the limited body, to the limitless shining light of true self. Put another way, are you this body, or the limitless, conscious existence looking through your eyes right now?
So where should you begin? Without a doubt, Karma Yoga! It’s a foundational practice that purifies the mind of negative binding karma and sets the stage for liberation. If you’d like to know more, read Transform Your Life With Every Action and watch this Karma Yoga Workshop.
